Where I Come From
The small box covered in blue wrapping paper lay in my hand
Thoughts raced through my head, a video game? A gift card?
A small titanium Swiss army knife lay inside the box
It was a small gift but with it I was becoming a man
My uncle used this knife to teach me responsibility
I would never give that knife up for the world
The breeze ran through my hair and the ropes tattooed my back
The hammock creaked back and forth, a peaceful song
I heard their giggles and watched my cousins peer over the endless bay
I laid there till the sun set and the only sound was the waves hitting the rocks
The bay was my second home and the place where my family could be together
Unsteady beats pounded so hard the ear buds almost fell out of my ears
I watched my brother mouth along to the song I was listening to
The screech of the guitars, the beat of the drums blared
The singer, completely unsynchronized
To most it is annoying but to me it is the first peaceful moment I’ve had all day
My Ipod always knows how to make my day better
The odor filled the room the moment they came out of the oven
I was but seven or eight at the time but I knew that smell inside and out
I grabbed at the cookies so fast the chocolate chips scorched my fingers
I ate so many cookies I was sure I’d see them later
When I didn’t and I was sure it was safe I learned a valuable lesson
I could have had one more of Aunt Lea’s famous cookies
I come from family traditions
Card Games
Camping trips to the Frio River
And homemade ice cream
This it where I come from and I wouldn’t have it any other way
